Key focal points in the communities where learning can be gained and shared
Libraries are so important and can form an oasis of learning in a community. In 2016 we began supporting two community organisations; CSCARTS in Bakote, Gambia and Inspiring Young-Stars in Abuko, Gambia, working with them to achieve their dreams of establishing effective libraries. We found that most of their books were outdated and unsuitable for effective learning, so we have begun locating relevant books through schools and colleges in the UK. Over 200 medical books were donated by a book drop at Leeds University organised by Vessel UK EmpowerUS Project Leader, Funmi Abari. The organisation Emerald Live in the UK is also fundraising for resources.
There is still a great deal to achieve as both spaces are in need of building repair; lacking sufficient seating, tables, lighting, storage and computer access for the areas they serve.
